studio description

This class will follow a design methodology based on analogue and digital modeling techniques. Thru the creation of abstract, diagrammatic prototypes we will try to explore possible new architectural typologies, which we will later apply to the city and the specific conditions of the site given.

This class consist of an early analogue modeling workshop to be held by Gabi Schillig. The prototypes produced there will be the base for a digital modeling second phase, focusing on parametric design and digital manufacturing techniques. A series of software orientated tutorials will accompany this phase. The schools laser cuter and 3d plotter will be used in addition.

Finally in phase three, the produced diagrammatic structures will be informed with the site specific conditions and transformed into buildings.

The architectural proposals of phase three will be a big scale project, located in the city of Beirut, dealing with the typical problems and challenges of its urban fabric. Organizational, spatial or structural aspects explored in the previous phases will be integrated. In the following step students will invent a program for their building proposal, suitable to their site and geometrical system (housing, office, merchandising, cultural facilities, public spaces etc). Site-plan, floor plans, sections, 3d digital and physical models are expected, in the scale of 1:200. Each student should produce a minimum of one photo montage of his building in the city of Beirut. Students will work in groups.

The studio consist of computational classes, pin up and desk critique sessions. The produced material will be documented and published internationally.
